In the 1960s, Cambodia has involved in the Vietnam War. To avoid conflicts with the United States and North Vietnam, Prince Sihanouk wanted to declared Cambodia as a neutral state. Due to a coup in 1970, they had forced to fight against North Vietnam and support the United States. Which Khmer Republic was formed. And so, this anthem was adopted. This anthem remained in use until Khmer Rouge has taken over this country.
