Water conservation is the careful use and preservation of water supply, and it includes both the quantity and quality of water utilized. Water is an essential asset for the nourishment of all life. The main problems with water are water shortage, shortages of clean water, and waterborne diseases. A lack of access to safe water caused 80% of all deaths worldwide. Approximately 900 million to 1.1 billion people worldwide lack clean drinking water, and 2.4 billion lack basic sanitation. Water demand is increasing at a rate faster than population growth. The United Nations estimates that in 2025, 5 billion of the world's 8 billion people will live in areas where water is scarce. Increasing populations, growing agriculture, industrialization, and high living standards have boosted water demand while drought, overuse, and pollution have decreased the supplies. To make up for this shortfall, water is often taken from lakes, rivers, and wetlands, causing serious environmental damage that trigger global warning. According to a 2003 United Nations report, "Across the globe, groundwater is being depleted by the demands of megacities and agriculture, while fertilizer runoff and pollution are threatening water quality and public health” (theberkey.com, 2022). For these reasons, the team came up with Project SAWD: Smart Automated Water Dispenser. The project utilizes mbot 2.0 controller, an ultrasonic sensor that detects the presence of a glass/plastic container, a relay module that turns ON the DC motor pump during dispensing, a DC motor pump that pumps water, a chargeable battery that serves as power source of the DC motor pump and MBot shield and solar panel, a renewable power source that charges batteries. The acrylic board serves as glass/plastic water container holder. The device can help conserve water because the dispenser dispenses just enough amount of water without spilling.

操作说明:

The device works by turning ON the power switch of the mbot 2.0 shield and the DC motor pump. Then, place the empty glass/plastic cup at the center of the holder following the guide. Then the ultrasonic sensor will detect the obstacle and after 3 seconds the DC motor pump will automatically dispense just enough amount of water, thus there is no overflow or water wastage. Once the water reaches around 10 cm distance from the sensor, the DC motor pump will automatically turn off. A 5-second time delay is applied giving time for the removal of the glass/plastic cup of water
