As stipulated on DepEd Memo No. 71, s. 2021 and released on October 18, 2021. One of the requirements of the Department of Education (DepEd), Philippines in School Safety Assessment Tool (SSAT) in Progressive Limited Face-to-Face for the opening of classes is trash bin comprising the following: red color for non-biodegradable, green for biodegradable, blue for recyclable and yellow for infectious waste. The infectious waste trash bin should be hands-free for the learners. Commercial trash is commonly foot-operated and all of the trash bins in school are manually operated. Thus, it is not safe for the learners to throw their infectious waste for might be infected with viruses or bacteria. The team came up with a project to convert a manually operated trash bin into a Smart Touch-Free Trash Bin for Infectious Wastes, which will automatically open and close without touching it. This project uses the ultrasonic sensor modules, Arduino Uno controller, rechargeable battery, servomotor, mechanism, charge controller module and plastic enclosure box. The ultrasonic sensor is used to check the presence of hands/obstacle in front. Once it detects an obstacle around 15cm, the transmitter transmits an ultrasonic sound and bounces back to the receiver that triggers the servomotor to open a 180-degree angle and close returning to 0-degree angle. It utilizes an old trash bin from school and a rechargeable battery to operate the sensory system circuit that enable the trash bin cover to open and close it automatically. This device is one of the solutions in avoiding COVID 19 transmission in the midst of pandemic especially in public places and most importantly, it is portable, chargeable, customized and touch-free.
