Our country introduced protective measures to restrict movement as part of efforts to reduce the number of people infected with COVID-19, more and more of us are making new changes and adjustments to our daily routines. The new realities of working from home, temporary unemployment, home-schooling of children, and limited physical contact with other family members, friends, and colleagues take time to get used to. Adapting to lifestyle changes such as these, and managing the fear of contracting the virus and worry about people close to us who are particularly vulnerable, are challenging for all of us (who.int/campaigns/connecting-the-world-to-combat-coronavirus, 2020). Filipinos are very resilient individuals because of COVID-19 pandemic. Due to lock down imposed by the government through IATF health safety and protocols, limited can go out at home to buy their basic needs. That’s why most of the people do backyard gardening by utilizing DIY hydroponics gardening in order to sustain living. In DIY hydroponics gardening, refilling of plant water container is repetitive especially if you have lots of plants to sustain the water level. For that reason, the team came up with a project Solar-Powered Automatic Watering System for DIY Hydroponic Gardening which will automatically pump water when the plant water container reaches to low level and stop when it’s full. The device utilizes recyclable water bottles, solar panel and a rechargeable battery to operate the sensory system circuit that enable the DC motor to pump water automatically. This device is one of the solutions in refilling the plant water container once it reaches at low level. This DIY Hydroponic gardening enables to provide food to sustain living in the midst of pandemic and most importantly it is portable, rechargeable, customized and solar-powered.

The Solar-Powered Automatic Watering System for DIY Hydroponic Gardening uses an ultrasonic sensor, Arduino Uno controller, rechargeable battery, DC motor pump, solar panel, charge controller module, level hose, recyclable water bottles and scrap plastic enclosure box. The ultrasonic sensor is used to check the presence of the water level as an obstacle. Once turned on, it detects an obstacle around 10-cm distance, the transmitter transmits an ultrasonic sound waves and bounce back to the receiver that triggers the DC motor pump water to refill the plant water container. When it reaches at full level the DC motor pump will automatically stop. The device will continuously perform its job automatically.
