Greetings to our fellow judges. Our team, OnlyWs, consisting of myself, Tang Kai Wen, and my partner Tan Jun Meng from Victoria School, will be showcasing to you our security alarm, consisting of the Cyberpi, the Smart Camera and the mBot. Now, have you ever wondered about how easily your house could be broken into at night, leaving the safety of the household members at risk? A single lock pick, and within minutes an intruder can gain access to your house. Therefore, we came up with the idea of a security alarm as we hoped that it would prevent any unwanted invasions or thefts into the house, ensuring the safety of the user and their family members at night, as well as protecting and alerting the house owner from any threats outside with such a simple setup. If every household were able to afford and equip such a simple setup, it would greatly decrease the crime rate and give families a sense of security at home. Now, it is reported in the U.S. that a burglar strikes every 30 seconds. That adds up to two burglaries every minute and over 3,000 burglaries per day. Now, it is important to note that many families or households do not have a security alarm installed in their house, which is one of the main reasons how many successful break-ins there are in the world, compromising the safety of the household members and the valuables in the household. Break-ins and burglaries come in as the most-mentioned property crime worry in the 2021 State of Safety Survey. This is why we wanted to create a simple burglar alarm, easy to install and operate, to prevent unwanted break-ins, and give household members a peace of mind at night as well.

Now, to create a security alarm, I thought of 3 main features of the Cyberpi that are essential to making a good and efficient security alarm - Sound sensor, Light Sensor and the Motion Sensor to essentially detect any intruders at night. When any one of the sensors are triggered, an alarm will be sounded by the Cyberpi and will alert the homeowner of any unwanted intruders. The sound sensor would be triggered when it detects an exceptionally high volume of noise at night, the light sensor would be triggered when it detects a sudden spike in light intensity across the room, and the motion sensor will be triggered when the Smart Camera Detects any movement in the room. The Smart Camera is programmed in such a way that it recognises the colour of the wall, and when there is movement between the camera and the wall, the Smart camera is unable to recognise the colour of the wall anymore, hence sounding an alarm. To increase the reliability of the security alarm, I also made use of the ultrasonic sensor of the mBot, which sounds an alarm as well when it detects an object near it. This alarm would be eventually picked up via the sound sensor of the Cyberpi. So how we decided to design or robot is that we decided to place the ultrasonic sensor in front of the mBot, the Cyberpi directly on top of the mBot, facing the ceiling, so that it is able to detect any sudden light or sound intensity change, while the Smart Camera facing the back of the mBot. There should be a 20cm distance between the wall and the Smart Camera, as this distance is just enough for the Smart Camera to recognise the colour of the wall This simple set-up is very user friendly, simply turn both the mBot and the Cyberpi on (with the Smart Camera connected to it) and place it in a dark area (for example the living room or even the corridor at night) and it will trigger an alarm when it detects an intruder!
